Back in 2024, Michigan’s state laws about firearms storage changed. Now, gun owners are required to lock up their guns when not in use. And now, if you want a free gun lock, an online mapping tool will tell you exactly where to find one.
Lock ‘em up @ TFB:
Why do you need a lock in Michigan?
In some states, there are no safe storage laws, but in other states, the law says you have to secure your firearms from unauthorized access when you’re not in direct control. In other words, they want you to lock up your guns so kids don’t play with them and get hurt. Or at least that is the publicized wording behind these laws, including inside the state of Michigan, which passed laws that require gun owners to either lock their gun inside a container when there’s a minor present, or to use a trigger lock or similar device to prevent unauthorized usage of the firearm. These laws even apply when you’re staying at someone else’s house, where you think minors may be present.
You can see the full explanation of Michigan’s laws here. And whether you agree with the new laws or not, the reality is that many people are now looking for a gun lock to keep them out of trouble with Johnny Law—and a website from Michigan’s state government is aimed to help you find those gun locks for free.
According to the website, there are 150 sites around the state where you can pick up the locks for free, and they’re all over both the Lower Peninsula and the UP. See the whole list of free lock giveaway sites here. They’re giving away cable-style locks purchased through Project ChildSafe, with state police distributing the locks.
“If you have a firearm in your home, it is your responsibility to store it properly, away from minors – it’s the law,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police. “An interactive tool like this map makes it easier than ever to obtain a free gun lock that can be used to safely store a firearm in your home and most importantly, potentially save a life. Please visit an MSP Post, your local police department or any MDHHS office to obtain a free gun lock.”
