Welcome back to Wheelgun Wednesday, our weekly article series that covers everything about wheelguns, and on this selected day. This week, Taurus gives the single-action revolver segment something it has rarely offered: a factory dual cylinder setup on a traditionally styled wheelgun.
The single-action revolver market has seen a genuine resurgence over the past several years. While the format never truly disappeared, it had long been the domain of cowboy action shooters, hunters, and traditionalists. What has changed recently is the broadening of the audience, with more everyday shooters showing interest in SAA-style revolvers as trail guns, recreational range pieces, and even affordable entry points into wheelgun ownership. Taurus has been tracking that trend closely, and the Deputy line has been a direct response to it.
The original Deputy established a clear identity: classic Old West aesthetics, honest single-action operation, and a price point that invites new shooters to the format without demanding a premium. The new Deputy Dual Cylinder builds on that foundation with a feature that addresses one of the more practical questions a buyer might ask before committing to a single-action revolver, which is whether they can use ammunition they already keep on hand.
The answer with the Deputy Dual Cylinder is yes, and then some. The revolver ships with two cylinders, one chambered for .357 Magnum and .38 Special, the other for 9mm. All three options run at six rounds. The interchangeable cylinder system allows a straightforward swap between calibers, giving the shooter access to the power of .357 Magnum for field use, the softer recoil and lower cost of .38 Special for range sessions, or the widespread availability of 9mm when that is what happens to be in the bag. It is a genuinely practical arrangement on a platform that has historically been quite less flexible in that regard.
“The Deputy Dual Cylinder reflects our commitment to honoring traditional firearm design while offering practical features that today’s shooters value,” said Caleb Giddings, General Manager of Marketing. “The fact that the Deputy can accommodate the three most popular handgun calibers makes it a versatile choice, and makes it easier for shooters to get into the single action revolver game if they already keep 9mm on hand.”
The rest of the package is consistent with the Deputy’s established character. The 5.5-inch barrel provides the traditional balance expected from the format, finished in high-gloss polish. The half-moon front sight is a period-correct detail lifted from 19th-century SAA design. Grips are durable polymer with the Taurus bullhead logo. The four-click hammer operation and transfer bar safety system round out the spec sheet, the latter allowing safe carry with all six chambers loaded.
For a shooter looking to get into single-action revolvers without locking themselves into a single cartridge, the Deputy Dual Cylinder makes a reasonable case. Whether the appeal is nostalgia, trail utility, or simply having options, it covers more ground than most revolvers in its class.
