The Springfield Armory Echelon has been the darling of Geneseo, Illinois ever since its inception for innumerable reasons. The supremely-clever optics mounting system, texturing/stippling that borders on coming from a Custom Shop, a chassis design for ultimate modularity, and flat out performance from the first magazine. Over the few years it has been out, it has evolved through different frame sizes, barrel configurations, and factory packages to please as many shooters as possible. What if you want the hot rod, but money is tight? We get it and so does Springfield. They have now announced the Echelon Alpha with a very sharp price point of $599 compared to a standard Echelon being sold for $710 and up. So, today we are going to take a look at the new Springfield Armory Echelon Alpha 4.0C 9mm to see how it performs on the range. Let’s dive in!

As previously stated, the newly announced Springfield Armory Echelon Alpha 4.0C 9mm has an MSRP of $599. This is $111 more affordable than legacy Echelon models making it more attainable for competitors, shooters, and self-defense advocates who wish to jump in on this platform. So, what’s the upsell? What’s the metaphorical and literal 30-second elevator pitch? For the Echelon Alpha, you’re looking at several prominent traits that might tip the scales in favor of Springfield as opposed to a competing manufacturer at a similar price point.

Range Experience – Springfield Armory Echelon Alpha 4.0C 9mm

So, how did the new Echelon Alpha 4.0C 9mm perform out on the range?… I am very familiar with all of the prior iterations of Echelons that have come before the Alpha, I’ve reviewed many of them here on TFB! So, I was very curious to see what might actually be different and if it would change my perspective of the series as a whole.

What’s Different?

The “elephant in the room” for me, and many of us, is what exactly is different? Well, we’re glad that you asked. The biggest differences are a recontoured slide, the fact that it only ships with 1 magazine, and the Echelon Alpha deploys white dot sights compared to a standard U-Notch rear sight and a tritium front sight with luminescent ring. These few, small tweaks have helped bring the MSRP from $710 down to only $599.

• Recontoured Slide – The recontoured slide of the Echelon Alpha is precision forged and finished in Melonite® for durability. Deep, aggressive serrations deliver a secure grip for fast, positive manipulation in any condition.
• Stainless Steel Magazine – The Echelon Alpha ships with a single stainless-steel magazine, offering a 9mm capacity of 15+1. Built from corrosion-resistant stainless steel, it stands up to the elements, delivering dependable feeding and long service life. All Echelon magazines are compatible with the Echelon Alpha.

Optics Mounting

One trait that is consistent from standard Echelons to the Echelon Alpha is the Variable Interface System (V.I.S.). You still have the “peg and post” mounting system that allows you to mount red dots to the Alpha without the need of adapter or mounting plates. The Echelon Alpha comes with an RMR Pin Set in the box, and extra footprints like Shield RMS and DeltaPoint Pro can be purchased separately.

For this review, Springfield shipped our sample Alpha pistol with a Vortex Defender-ST red dot already on the slide for testing, which is a Leupold DeltaPoint Pro footprint. Additionally, I added one of my Surefire X300U-A weaponlights as well.

Accuracy

For accuracy testing, I tried shooting multiple 5-shot groups at 10 yards and most of them came out the same. Roughly 1” to 1 ½” in size depending on if I had a flyer in the group or not. While shooting for group size and during drills, I was using Remington Range 9mm 115 Grain FMJ. A shout-out and thank you to Remington as they provided ammunition for this review.

Durability

I’ve had an Echelon Alpha in my possession for a couple of months now, and it has survived all of the use that I have subjected it to. Mind you, none of my use has been “click-bait, unnecessary damage.” It has been in traditional use: concealed carry, racking the red dot on tables, slow-fire bullseye shooting, dynamic or rapid-fire drills (2-gun or 3-gun style), and allowing it to slide or rest on shooting tables or the tailgate of my truck. Through this standard body of work, it basically shows no wear and it has performed exactly as intended.

Intangibles

While this isn’t specifically unique to the Echelon Alpha (it applies to all Echelons), but I love the Variable Interface System (V.I.S.) for mounting optics and the fact that this is a chassis design where the Central Operating Group (C.O.G.) can be “plug and play” into different frame and slide combinations. I have been preaching since the Echelon’s introduction that their mounting system is the best in the industry – bar none. Also, the COG opens Pandora’s box of possibilities and combinations you can make for yourself. 

Final Thoughts

So, what are my final thoughts on the Springfield Armory Echelon Alpha 4.0C 9mm? Overall, the pistol delivers on every measurable you’d want, including price. To shave over $100 off of the standard Echelon’s price tag could be a big deal to a lot of shooters. Money is tight right now, and people don’t want to sacrifice quality simply because their budget or the economy has them squeezed. So, I applaud Springfield for attempting to make this staple model of theirs more affordable for the masses.
