This is not a war story.
It is a record of responsibility.
Lessons from a career.
Authority Without Control is a memoir of leadership under pressure, where decisions carry weight long after the moment has passed. From rural Nebraska to Afghanistan, Brandon Burton writes about the quiet, often invisible burden of command- where restraint matters more than action, and where the hardest choices are the ones no one sees, both in war and coming home.
This book is not about heroics. It is about proximity to consequence.
For those who have led, those who have followed, and those still trying to understand the cost.
Lessons handed down from 20yrs spent in our Nation’s longest war.

Introspective story about a man who experienced the quagmire of GWOT, dealt with it how a lot of military guys do, suffered the consequences, BUT had the inner strength and courage to heal.
It’s easy to read but definitely makes you pause and look at your own life. His helpful bits of wisdom sprinkled throughout the book are down to earth and reflect his rural upbringing. His approach to life is inspiring and while he is brutally honest and vulnerable in his personal failings, he is equally inspiring in his road to restoration.
Don’t let his National Guard career fool you. I served for a while in Ranger Regiment and Brandon would have fit right in. I served with him in the Engineer unit and he’s the real deal. I appreciate his drive, his honesty, and his obvious love, respect, and appreciation for his brothers in arms.
As a current active duty Army chaplain, I read a lot of books about moral injury. This book is not a clinical research study or a lengthy discourse on theology or psychotherapy. It is simply about a small-town Nebraska boy who grew up, raised his right hand after 9-11, faced tough times, and wrote down his experiences. It’s vulnerable, wise, and shows his character. Definitely the most accessible moral injury book for the common man I’ve ever read.
I regret I can only give this book 5 stars. Every Veteran and their loved ones should read and reread this book!
Review 2:
Great book about time in the military from a highly motivated small town Nebraska boy.
Spent time under his command and he tells his story spectacularly.
Great book. Easy read. Hard to put down until you’re finished.
