This Photo of the Day captures a practical precision rifle setup built around the Schmeisser Pro Hunter paired with the Schmidt & Bender 3-18×42 META, tested under less-than-ideal winter conditions. Cold temperatures and wind provided a realistic environment for confirming both rifle and optic performance beyond controlled range scenarios. For some of the competitions, I have to use a suppressor to comply with local rules. No problems for me, but it adds to the complexity.
The process begins where it should, finding suitable ammunition (.223 Rem) and establishing a solid zero at 100 meters before stretching the setup further. Follow-up validation at extended distances, including 300 meters and beyond, allows the shooter to confirm ballistic data and refine holds. Optics like the 3–18×42 META, with its first focal plane reticle and dialing capability, are designed to support this type of workflow, enabling consistent adjustments across varying magnification levels.
My main issue was not the shooting, but the mirage. Imagine a suppressor, and how hot it gets after just a few rounds, versus the cold weather. To help, I used the Riflekühl Barrel Cooler by MagnetoSpeed for the first time and I was really surprised by how much air it was able to move.
In fact, I was able to warm my hands from the steady flow of warm air from the barrel. The suppressor is an Ase Utra dual556-mini gen2.
The new Vortex Talon 12×50 HD 10k is my new LRF companion. I only wish it would connect to Applied Ballistics.
Not the best image, but it gives you an idea of what one of the reticles looks like. To me, this is a great reticle.
I’m surprised how well this setup has worked, and in two out of two matches, I managed to get to the podium. Zero malfunctions so far, and I only cleaned it once. I can’t blame the gear, only myself, for not doing better.
