Tampa Bay turned into a live battlespace on May 20, 2026, as U.S. Special Operations Forces and personnel from 10 partner nations executed the annual “Battle in the Bay” capability demonstration along the downtown waterfront. The scenario centered on a simulated kidnapping and rescue operation, with helicopters, rigid-hull inflatable boats, drones, ATVs, and combat divers all converging in a compressed one-hour window that gave both conference attendees and members of the public a rare look at how modern SOF elements operate in coordination. Above a P320 with a FLUX Defence chassis can be seen.
The demonstration is a biennial tradition within SOF Week, co-hosted by U.S. Special Operations Command and the Global SOF Foundation as the flagship public-facing event of a conference built around interoperability, education, and capability development.
Ten partner nation forces participated this year alongside their American counterparts, underscoring the command’s emphasis on what USSOCOM describes as the “team of teams” model, integrating allied SOF elements into shared operational frameworks rather than treating partnership as ceremonial.
For the duration of the event, the marina basin adjacent to the Tampa Convention Center was closed to civilian traffic, and viewing crowds stretched along the Riverwalk, Harbour Island, and Bayshore Boulevard to watch the operation unfold.
