Back at SHOT Show, the Winchester Ammunition booth had some new products they were showing off, including new long-range ammo and a new line of cartridges specifically aimed at feeding lever-action rifles. Now, the Winchester Lever Range is on its way to dealers, and you can arm yourself with this updated lineup.
Lever-action firepower @ TFB:
- Winchester’s new 1895 & 1886 rifles
- Winchester Model 1886 Short Rifle
- Fudd Friday: Building A BLR Into A Better Fudd Rifle
- Fudd Friday: Winchester Model 1892 – The Best Keeps Getting Better
In recent years, we’ve seen a resurgence in lever-action rifles. Some (like the Browning BLR and Henry Long Ranger series) are made with box magazines and can handle pointy bullets. But a lot of the new rifles (much of Henry’s updated lineup, the Smith & Wesson Model 1854, the many new Turkish copies of the Model 1892 action) use tube magazines. This appears to be the market the Winchester Lever Range is aimed at.
At this point, Winchester has announced the Lever Range is shipping to dealers in .30-30, .357 Mag, .44 Mag, .45LC and .45-70. You can see the specs for the cartridges below.
Note that all those figures came from a 20-inch barrel except the .30-30, which was measured from a 24-inch barrel. Also note that the heavy-duty rounds (.30-30 and .45-70) ship in 20-round boxes while the pistol-caliber rounds are sold in 50-round boxes.
Who are these for? Winchester says, “Built specifically for lever-action enthusiasts, this purpose-designed ammunition delivers smooth feeding & fast cycling, cleaner burning, and tighter groups so your classic lever guns can keep winning on the range.”
Winchester lists more details on the new Lever Range loads at its website here, but unfortunately, it does not list an MSRP. But these should be at your local dealer soon enough, if you’re curious.
