Basic training puts a rifle in your hands. The specialized advanced instruction teaches you what to do with it. Soldiers of the Lëtzebuerger Arméi’s Instruction avancée spécialisée (IAS) recently took to the range for a Tir Opérationnel, an operational shooting exercise designed to push marksmanship, tactical movement, and team coordination beyond what the introductory phase covers.
The IAS is the second half of Luxembourg’s eight-month initial training pipeline, following basic instruction. Where the first phase builds the individual soldier, the IAS starts binding those individuals into functional units, with field periods stretching days at a time and a curriculum that layers shooting modules, tactics, vehicle familiarization, and UAS instruction onto the foundation laid earlier.
The rifle they’re working with is the HK416A7, procured from Heckler & Koch under an April 2023 contract worth around 8.4 million Euros. Luxembourg fields the platform in both a 14.5-inch infantry configuration and an 11-inch carbine, chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, replacing the Steyr AUG that had served the Arméi since 1995.
The soldiers who complete this pipeline go on to fill Luxembourg’s two operational reconnaissance companies, its Eurocorps commitment, and NATO deployments abroad.
