Canada’s cops are gunning up, and they’re not following the pattern of their country’s military and dithering for years, then buying SIGs. Instead, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, aka the Mounties, are buying Glocks.
Glock @ TFB:
The deal for the new Glocks runs through Rampart Corporation, the distributor of Glock pistols for Canadian law enforcement and other government contracts. According to Rampart, the Mounties are going to buy Glock 45 MOS 7 pistols. The government announcement doesn’t list the exact number of handguns purchased, but there are nearly 20,000 uniformed RCMP officers in Canada and another 10,000 civilian employees (who presumably would not be receiving the new pistols).
Before adopting the new Glock, the RCMP’s issue handgun was the Smith & Wesson Model 5946, chambered in 9x19mm. The force adopted that handgun in the early 1990s, and in recent years, there were complaints about the outdated pistol. Before that, the Mounties used a series of revolvers all the way back to their founding in 1873. The last revolver they issued was the Smith & Wesson Military & Police in .38 Special, which is basically a S&W Model 10 K-frame.
Along with the new Glock 45 MOS 7 pistols, the RCMP will get a whole load of accessories included. They’re getting an Aimpoint ACRO P2 red dot, and a Streamlight TLR-7X weapon-mounted light. The pistols have Ameriglo night sights. They’ll pack this heat in a Safariland 6360RDS duty holster and a Nanuk 910 case. Rampart will also sell Glock 45s dedicated for training purposes.
Altogether, the deal will cost $39M CAD, or about $28.7M USD.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for RAMPART and our partners,” said Mike Klein, the big boss at Rampart Corp. “Once fielded, GLOCK pistols will be used by nearly 95% of Canadian Law Enforcement personnel.”
